Dendrochilum glumaceum

I always wanted this plant for its perfume. It's really difficult not to become bewitched by that sweet fragrance. I have a friend who has been growing for years a huge plant that gave more than 30 spikes this year. Wonderful to see (and smell!!) that "monster".

Wonderful display. Wish I had room for this one.

Very unique, What kind of conditions does it require?

Rosim_in_BR 09-09-2007 05:59 PM

It grows well under cattleya conditions, Esungirl.

Oooh thats a beauty for sure
This has been on my wish list for a while now.

Mauro, How big does this one get? :hmm

:D

Ten to twelve inches tall, Gloria. It is a vigorous grower, so it will get specimen size in a few years.

 The thought of this beauty with thirty spikes!
Thanks for sharing another one of your wonderful collection with us

Maura, it's too bad that you're so far away from me. I would be very much interested in trading your Dendrochilum glumaceum for my Dendrochilum magnum. I love dendrochilums, but my plant is big and I'm afraid it will soon require a new home. It produces dozens of spikes every fall (it's flower spikes are elongating now and will be putting on their display within the next few weeks), but the flowers (at least to my nose) do not smell especially nice. The scent reminds me of some kind of laundry detergent or bath soap. While not necessarily a bad smell, it is very strong, which makes it difficult to stay in the same room with the plant for any length of time without being inspired to go fill up the laundry machine. What kind of scent does glumaceum have? Can you describe it?

Too bad, yes, and if we were neighbors maybe we could trade many other plants, don't you think? I don't have D. magnum and would trade a piece of my glumaceum with pleasure.
It is difficult to put perfumes in words, but glumaceum has a strong perfume that reminds me some sort of chocolate and vanilla mix. It is delicious to smell!
Please, show us your D. magnun when it blooms!
