This is a new plant i got 5 days ago. When it came the pseudobulbs where all wrinkled as you can see they are starting to get plump. Any advice? The plant has a spike with 4 flowers on it which i'm not so sure it's going to open since it had a nasty 15 day trip :(( .

Looks pretty good to me. Give it moderately bright light, and don't let it dry out too much, and it should be fine.

They look like they might be OK. be sure to post pics if they bloom! Good luck!

So as i was fearing the plant got dehydrated from the 15day trip and it just dropped all 4 of the buds. I'm posting an image from the dropped buds.
I'm going to need an expert's opinion on the growing conditions of my Zygopetalum. It's sitting at the moment next to a southern window. It's getting a lot of sunlight behind a thin curtain and the growing medium is getting dry every other day. I'm currently watering it every second day but i can see that it's really by the time i water it. Should i water every day? Current temp is at 20-24C and i'm wondering if this is the situation with watering how often should i water in the summer where the temp is going to get to 28-30 C. I'm afraid i might overwater here and one of my thoughts would be to move the plant to a northern window but it will receive significantly less sunlight. Also does anyone know if Zygopetalums flower from the same spike or does it drop the spike after each flowering period ? Thanks for you time :bowing |
Zygopetalum and Zygosepalum do not repeat bloom from the same spike. Once it's done flowering, the spike will die back. They produce new flower spikes on the next blooming season. Sometimes they bloom twice a year. Once in spring, once in fall.
For over watering concerns please post a pic of the plant in it's current state. They should be watered year round, but in a seasonal manner. Fall and winter should have a lesser amount of water than spring and summer. |

Hi and thanks for your answer . Here are some fotos of the current state of the plant. I watered it yesterday and it's still wet today. The bulbs are still a bit wrinkled as you can see though they have plumped a lot.
Also the plant is growing a bit out of the plant should i repot ? I've read that you repot Zygos when they tend to grow outside the pot. |
Buds may have dropped because of the dry spell, like you thought.
I wouldn't be too concerned about the pseudobulbs having some wrinkles on them. They're not really going to go away. You can repot it if you like. I would try and find a pot that is about 1.27 cm larger than the one the orchid is in already. Otherwise, if you don't get a chance to repot the orchid right away it's not a big deal. It may be able to go another few months without repotting. |
