Mount Dendrobium Phalaenopsis?
 

I just mounted my first orchids (a couple cattleyas), and I'm hooked. I was looking around at what other plants I might have to experiment with, and I say a recent division of a phalaenopsis-type orchid. I don't know what the exact name of it is, and I'm yet to see it bloom. The original plant actual came from the bargain rack at Lowe's.

Anyway... how would this plant do mounted? I don't think they like drying out completely, and I'm worried that it might do that at least occasionally on a mount. Could I mount on a big pad of sphag? Either that, or I found a hollowed out log that I could probably mount the orchid more or less inside of. I figure that would help retain moisture more.

You could mount either a Dendrobium or a Phalaenopsis or even a Dendrobium phaleanopsis. However the later gets quite large and you would need a big stick or cork slab. In my experience Phalaenopsis (the common moth orchid that you see at supermarkets) grows really well mounted, but if it has been growing in sphagnum (most common) the plant probably won't do well unless you water very frequently.

Forgot to add if you mount the Phal, often they grow best mounted upside down water doesn't pool in the crown.

I have a mounted Den bigibbum (v compactum), smaller growing variety - it does great! Can be quite dry here, and even with very little moss on the mount it does fine with daily watering. In summer I'll soak it for several minutes. During extremely hot, dry weather I might water it twice a day.

I have inherited two mounted Dendrobium biggibum...the short compact that Sonya have and the long thin stemmed ones...also a Dendrobium aggregatum. Two months ago just before its winter rest I put a Dendrobium anosmum in a basket lined with coco fiber and covered the roots with treefern shavings.
I also recently posted my Dendrobium Golden Aya mounted in a treefern slab and it is in full bloom.
