canal on the background

When i was setting up my foam backgrand, i just found it maybe a critical issue that the foam backgrand did not contain any water.
Even in a terrarium, the humidity can rise to about 90% sometime and keep above 70% the most of time, but the backgrand is still too dry for plants to root into. After some not that successful try, now i think i have get a step on making my foam backgrand "living". Attachment 64784 The lines you see is normal cottom lampwick which is always used in an alcohol burner. I cutted these lampwicks and attached them following the undulation of the backgrand from bottom to top. These lines will work as capillary to transport water from earth to top day and night, the plants beside the lines can suck the water by their roots. It is safe, cheap and no extra power needed. The only thing i'm not sure is how long the cottom lampwick can keep. After finishing the construction, i planted some moss and ferns on it. Serveral months later, they are just fine. Very ingenious, your idea is very doable and cheap...the process of wicking the rope with water makes it miost enough to let the plants survive. Good work and good growing.

That's brilliant!!
|
That's very cunning - if you could find a plastic polymer based wicking fiber you'd be on to a long term winner - I suspect cotton will degrade quite fast.
Oh, the people that made EpiWeb in Sweden have recently come out with a fabric that wicks quite well - might be quite a good "base" to these kinds of projects. |
What a creative solution! The final result is really nice.
|
I was afraid of that going to be a problem when you 1st posted your back ground. I know that that surface is water repellent and difficult for roots to bury into. Your solution is brilliant!

Very nice idea !!!

Great idea! I didn't realize that background would be water repellent. How did you attach the rope to the background?
