More holes or is it enough?
3 Attachment(s)
So, I've re-potted all of my Phals and four of them had such large a root system that I had to use rather big pots. These, not really see-through, pots only have three holes in the bottom which I think is insufficient for Phals so I drilled some more holes a little all over and underneath the pot. Unfortunately I can't make the holes bigger since I use a rather small drilling machine, but is the amount sufficient or should I make some more?
I took a picture of the pot without the holes in it as well because... I have no idea actually... Because I could? Just to keep yapping, I bought my tiny drilling machine some years ago, thinking I might use it around the flat for small jobs. Never could I've guessed that the first time I used it, it would be to drill holes in a flower pot. |
It's probably enough - if the mix isn't drying out fast enough for your liking, add more, or make them bigger. You can also try using a hot wire or nail (heat it in a flame) and melt bigger holes (or even slits) in the pot. Preferably when the plant is not in it - and mind the fumes, with some plastics they can be quite toxic.

Thanks, I'll do that (add more holes that is, can't make 'em bigger unfortunately). :D

Hot metal clothes hangers make great cutting/hole making/enlarging tools. Soldering irons also work quite well.
You know how you bought a drill for Just In Case? ;) Dremels probably have a nifty attachment you could use to cut slits in the pot. I suspect the mini circular saw would work quite well. |
I'll remember this thread when it's time to re-pot them again because the Phals are in the pots now so all "hot metal melting holes" methods will probably not be appreciated by them. ;)
To be able to do this better in the future I'll need to buy a bigger drilling machine (or a dremel) so I can make larger holes. :D |
There's a particular type of drill bit Ray recommends for drilling pots for semi hydro - might be worth getting one, it'll be a lot cheaper than a dremel!
