Noid Dendro-keiki?
 

ok so here are a couple of pics from a rescue dendro I bought about a month ago. I was wondering what is growing at the base. Also I was wondering why it is growing roots from an old cane? granted it still has one leaf left on it...

Sorry about the pictures..first not being then now being HUGE! OB seems to be malfunctioning for me and I couldn't get back onto the board to fix anything...Now it is just being weird! :S

that's a new cane starting


that looks like an old spike sprouting roots - might turn into a keiki, or not - I have some dens that have sprouted roots from old spikes, so far they haven't done much

Oh I hope it turns into a keiki! I really want one:D Under the sheath it has a green bump...fingers crossed! So the new cane..what should I expect? This is my first dendro, so I am not sure about how they grow, and bloom. The only thing I have notice from all of my orchids sitting on this sill is that they are growing leave and roots a plenty! The best advice I have received on this board is to ignore them then water them...Figures that now they thrive!:rofl:

You can stake the new growth (gently, carefull, so as to not break it off), or not - I'm not sure if this one wants to grow pendulously or not - when it's bigger it will start growing some roots.

Since this is a noid, I don't know when it's bloom season might be - the swelling you mentioned could possibly be a spike, or a keiki. I also can't see if it wants a cool dry winter rest (for next winter) or not - some that look like yours do, but not all.

So when do I start staking new growth? When you said it might be growing pendulous what did you mean? I am really green when it comes to growing other plant than Phals :S

Pendulous - when the canes don't grow upright, but rather will begin to hang down. It's fine to let them hang (they do in nature, after all), if you can manage the plant that way, and get it enough light if it grows on a windowsill.

I kind of hate to advise on staking lol - would hate if you end up breaking the new growth due to my advice! You can stake now, or wait til it's bigger.

How I stake new Den canes - place a stake next to the new growth, and use a loose loop of twine, yarn, or twist tie. Don't force the new growth at all, just put the loose loop over it (make like a figure 8 from twine, yarn, or twist tie)

Here's sort of a lame example (see photo)of what I mean (I don't have any dens with new growth right now) ;) just to give you an idea of what I do. You can then slide the loop up as the growth grows.

Just be gentle and careful, and don't force it! You can wait til the growth is bigger, as well, and less likely to break off - you can turn the plant frequently to keep the new growth growing somewhat straight in the meantime.

If you got this plant at a store, I would suspect it is a nobile type and would want cool dry winter next year.
