JEM Orchids catasetinae
4 Attachment(s)
Greetings -
This is a plant from JEM's leaving-Florida sale - first blooming for me. The label says Ctsm. fimbriatum x Ctsm. galeritum 'dark'. It surely is mis-labeled. I think it is a Clowesia or (more likely) Clowesetum. I suspect one parent is Clo. russelliana. It is a lovely flower, clear celery color, russet spotting ranging from pale to pronounced. Morning scent of peppermint and anise; later afternoon eucalyptus. If anybody has one like this, from JEM, please clue me in to the proper identification. I have also e-mailed Gene Monnier, but I'm not sure if his e-dress still works. Many thanks - Nancy p.s. this plant has 3 more inflorescences growing! |
Doesn't anybody have a theory about the ID of this plant? Heck I'll even take 'some kind of cattleya' at this point.
I know for sure that it is not ctsm x ctsm, though |
Nancy
Can I send the pics to some of my friends to see if they can help? |
Hi Tricho -
Please, do whatever you can! I have these photos in my flikr album, if it would load faster ID help needed - JEM orchid - a photoset on Flickr Interesting, somebody said they had a virtually identical flower from JEM labeled as Cls. russelliana x Ctsm. Breckenridge Onyx 'Janet' - well, I also have this plant (or at least, that's what the tag says) here Clo (Cls. russelliana x Ctsm. Breckenridge Onyx 'Janet' (Large) on Flickr - Photo Sharing! and they are quite different! Then, in the gardenweb site, there is this: clo.russ x ctsm.brekenridge onyx first blooming seedling - Orchids Forum - GardenWeb which looks like my plant with the same name somewhat, but not at all like the pale greenish one. Though I realize that seedlings of the same crosses are almost infinitely variable, still...perhaps I will need to somehow establish/fund a DNA lab. But, Tricho, if you can run down any theories, please run them by me. I am sure this is not a ctsm. cross. Though one parent is probably a catasetum, I am convinced the other is clowesia. Life is full of mysteries! Cheers - Nancy |
Lets go very slowly. :)
Why do you think it is not a Catasetum hybrid? |
Hey Tricho -
Perhaps I have been babbling! I think it is a Clowesetum. You can see (I hope) in the photos that these are 'perfect' flowers, rather than male/female. I do think one parent is catasetum, and the other I *suspect* is Clowesia russelliana, mostly because of the patterns in the color as well as the anise-becoming-eucalyptus perfume. I'd particularly like to get a good ID because there's a possibility one (or more) of the growing inflorescences will bloom in time for a show coming up late this month. (Or not, they are ornery and stubborn.) Whew! Glad to get that out coherently. Cheers - Nancy |
Nancy
One of my friends says that it should be a Mormodia Jumbo Eva (Mormodes badia X Clowesia russeliana) or a Mormodia Mellorīs Dragon (Morm. badia X Clow dodsoniana). I can explain why he says that in a few hours, see if you agree. I'm busy now... |
Hi Tricho -
Jumbo Eva was registered by Jumbo in 2004; I got this JEM hybrid (seedling) in 2004 from JEM orchids, so I think it is unlikely to be this. Mellor's Dragon is also not a JEM registration. I think it must be a plant registered (or at least hybridized) by Gene Monnier. I'm not being stubborn about it, I just think it is very unlikely that a pretty well-known hybridizer would be selling plants cooked up by somebody else. Cheers - Nancy (though I will google photos of you suspected parents) |
Hi Nancy
My friend told me that based on some characteristics of the flowers. But more importantly he says that the photos that he has in one catalog from Jumbo (2005) shows very similar flowers. I do not know how JEM worked, but why should anyone refuse to sell plants from other sources if that would improve their sellings (I know JEM and Jumbo where rivals in a sense). Why donīt you try to email Jumbo? Who knows... Welcome to Jumbo Orchids |
Hi guys:I agree that this isn't what it is labeled to be, how about a russ x fim---it does have little teeth on the edge of the flower
