Den. Red Emperor 'Prince'
 

This is one of my three new orchids. This particular dendrobium has been on my wishlist and when I saw this one last week at a flower shop at a totally unexpected place (a small florist store inside subway station), I of course jumped on it. :biggrin:

The price was half what they would charge on the 28th street flower market (and they don't have nobiles yet). I was lucky to pick one with two thick canes loaded with flowers that give off strong rose/honey like fragrance all day!

Excellent find!!! Named as well? wow. Double lucky! Nobile Dens have such fantastic blooms. A shame I have nowhere to give them a winter rest, or else I would have several by now!

Camille, winter rests can actually be pretty easy for these hybrids. I read in a recent AOS magazine (maybe from last spring or summer?) about just putting them in a refrigerator (kept above freezing) for a week or two to initiate buds. Watering can be kept regular except during the refrigerated period, as cool temps are the primary bloom cue (though some of the species may be more stressed by water during winter).

Hybrids that are predominantly moniliforme (Ise, Yellow Chinsai, etc.) are even easier, as many of them grow year-roud and will push out buds after a month or two of nights in the mid-60s F (which is where I keep my house in the winter anyway). Basically automatic bloomers, in my conditions anyway.

Hi, Camille! Yes, I have three other nobile dens (all bred by Yamamoto dendrobium), namely, Yellow Song, Love Memory Fizz and Oriental Smile 'Fantasy', which is my favorite of them all! :)
I grew them all in my apartment all summer long and then I put them in on of my friends unheated balcony in october. It's been really mild winter in NYC so the buds are finally settting in. Well, I can't yet tell if those little swellings are buds or keikis, I hope not, but I will find out soon I guess.

So, yeah, I feel the same way as you do. I love these and I would have lots of them if I had a place for their winter rest. They are beautiful and the scent is just amazing on some of them (this red one and oriental smile have awesome fragrant)

The information you shared regarding the winter rest of these orchids need some correction. According to the yamamoto dendrobium website, these dendrobiums (not sure about nobile hybrids bred by some other people) need to experience temperature below 57F (14C) 25 nights each night for a minimum of one hour. So refrigiration of just one hour for about a month should work theoretically speaking.
But then again, I've never tried it myself so I'm not sure if the refrigiration would really work. I think sudden temperature change on a daily basis sticking the plant in and out of the fridge might shock the plant too much. I will post the result after trying with one plant as I will divide some of them this spring and should have doubled the nobile dens I have. woo hoo!!!
The problem is they tend to grow very tall in my care, so they don't really fit the fridge I have. lol

I almost picked up this one from Hausermanns when I ordered last week. Its beautiful for sure.

It is nice! I love the color and it smells amazing all day and night! All my other nobile dens smell the strongest in the morning and then fades as the day progresses, but this one is just crazy. in a great way! :biggrin:

I got this one at a small florist at Flushing main st station at the end of 7 line. a bit far but they have lots of great orchids at 20 bucks each. cash only just so you know. ;)

SO glad to find this thread! I just scored one at the grocery store (Wegmans) where it's usually UNHEARD of to find a tagged chid. It was so pretty that I just couldn't resist it. Any updates on how urs is doing NYCorchidman?
