Hi all just found this forum today and it looks like a great repository of info for someone new to orchids! I hail from Connecticut and am a Horticulture and Micro/Cellular Biology double major at the University of Connecticut! Recently I fell in love with growing orchids after finding a couple books in my local borders when it was going out of business and I am falling in love : ). Since a lot of my study focuses on genetics and breeding processes I feel right at home! Too bad these guys are so finicky..oh well that's part of the mystique I suppose. Attached is a pic of my first orchid I got today for my birthday as a gift from my loving friends! Its a NOID Dendra as soon as I get back to my dorm I want to take a pic because I think there are 3 immature shoots also in the planter with the main one thats in flower. If so I want to seperate them when i can. Hope to stick around for a while! ~Zach~

welcome. One orchid is just the beginning for you !
Maybe you can take on a phal pollination/propagation project at school. We need ( well, I do !!! ) a step-by-step detailed method. I saw a book on Amazon for $400....... |
Welcome & Hello !
Sit back and relax...you've come to the right place...read postings by other members and learn from their wealth of knowledge gleaned from their years of experience on growing orchids. Its a two way process: we can also learn from you! |
400 for a book? Can you link thats insane. Although maybe its a college textbook type of thing. In which case in no way am I surprised.

Also Bud I see were around the same age and you live in NY im planning a trip to the Bronx Botanical Garden to see their Tiger Orchid in bloom. PM me if you have any interest in meeting up!

Hello and welcome to the OB!

here's the link.......( probably well worth it, if only I had a greenhouse )
Amazon.com: Micropropagation of Orchids (9781405160889): Joseph Arditti: Books |
:welcomeflowers: BTW, the correct Genus name for your NOID orchid is Dendrobium.

Welcome to the OB and enjoy the discussions. My compliments to your friends: they have good taste. That's a beautiful plant. If it has indeed 3 shoots forming at the base, it is sure a good sign. It's very tempting to remove them and pot them up individually, but dendrobiums don't like that at all. When the time comes, leave at least 3 pseudobulbs together.
