New to the forum(clearly) :D
 

Hi all just found this forum today and it looks like a great repository of info for someone new to orchids! I hail from Connecticut and am a Horticulture and Micro/Cellular Biology double major at the University of Connecticut! Recently I fell in love with growing orchids after finding a couple books in my local borders when it was going out of business and I am falling in love : ). Since a lot of my study focuses on genetics and breeding processes I feel right at home! Too bad these guys are so finicky..oh well that's part of the mystique I suppose. Attached is a pic of my first orchid I got today for my birthday as a gift from my loving friends! Its a NOID Dendra as soon as I get back to my dorm I want to take a pic because I think there are 3 immature shoots also in the planter with the main one thats in flower. If so I want to seperate them when i can. Hope to stick around for a while! ~Zach~

Maybe you can take on a phal pollination/propagation project at school. We need ( well, I do !!! ) a step-by-step detailed method. I saw a book on Amazon for $400.......

400 for a book? Can you link thats insane. Although maybe its a college textbook type of thing. In which case in no way am I surprised.

Also Bud I see were around the same age and you live in NY im planning a trip to the Bronx Botanical Garden to see their Tiger Orchid in bloom. PM me if you have any interest in meeting up!

:welcomeflowers: BTW, the correct Genus name for your NOID orchid is Dendrobium.

Welcome to the OB and enjoy the discussions. My compliments to your friends: they have good taste. That's a beautiful plant. If it has indeed 3 shoots forming at the base, it is sure a good sign. It's very tempting to remove them and pot them up individually, but dendrobiums don't like that at all. When the time comes, leave at least 3 pseudobulbs together.
