Here in Rio Dulce, Guatemala we have had a rather dramatic transition from wet season to dry season ushered in by a quick series of cold fronts. Rainfall has dropped dramatically and so has the average temp. A recent overnight low was 64F -- we put on a extra blanket and were wearing coats in the AM! Geez, It was freezing for here! But, the orchids loved it.
This has induced many of the orchids at my place to produce bloom spikes. Pics attached. Should be overwhelmed with blooms very soon! |
Wow, thats a lot of blooms that are coming up for you. Its nice when mother nature cooperates.
64 as a low temp huh. Thats very warm by NYC standards, hehe. Enjoy it! |

I like to joke that here in NYC, in the early spring when the temperature hits 60 everyone is out in shorts and t shirts. But in the fall when the temperature drops into the 60's for the first time, everyone wears their thickest sweaters, turtle necks, scarfs, hats and heavy coats. Go figure. |

Lots of orchids still producing spikes and new growth, but only a few have bloomed...many are getting very close though! Even the bromeliads are getting active...a couple of very interesting/colorful varieties here.

A couple more opened up today!
One is a Cattleya "Thiago" (a surviving bit of the name tag was helpful) Another appears to be some variety of Oncidium (quite pretty). Pics attached. Loads of spikes on many other plants, so more to come. |
WOW! You have quite an array of blooms...nice to look at them outdoors in its natural environment...
after the summer heat; 64F in the fall is cold...but after the below zero of winter= 64F in the spring is quite warm...it makes me sweat just walking to the subway stop... |
Yes, lots of naturally occurring varieties and lots of imported hybrids too.
64F...brrrr....58F is the lowest overnight low I have seen here in the past 5 years! |
Nice collection, Curtis ! I saw a Brassavola cordata, a beautiful Coilostylis parkinsoniana (syn. Epidendrum) and the Oncidium in the last group is ornithorhynchum.
