3 new surprise orchids!

Hi guys, I figured that I have to share this story here!!!

I once went to a friend's place. (a month ago) and brought home a NOID dendrobium from him that he had potted in potting soil. It root system had COMPLETELY rotted but I just kept it in an empty room, hidden from everyone (mom didn't want me to get any more orchids till my exams were over... -_-).
Tonight, I realized that I had hidden that orchid in the back room! (I forgot). It didn't have a chance at living before but I just found out that it has sprouted TWO four inch keikis with about 8 3-4" roots each and another keiki was forming on another pseudobulb. (the pseudobulbs are all dried up btw).
...The point is that while I wait for my 50 orchids to arrive on next monday...I GOT 3 FREE DENDROBIUMS!!!

Here they are just potted them up.

This is the third one. There's a few roots (tiny) also. Waiting for it to grow big enough to be potted up.

P.S: Turmeric is a lot better fungicide than cinnamon.

WOW! good luck on growing that ... it looks like it is still alive but its so dehydrated
yes...tumeric is a good fungicide but not the powder form(it dessicates the roots) make sure to make a water paste first or get a liquid extract

Yeah I soaked the roots. They turned all green so they were alive and absorbing water. I do think the first two will survive but I won't be expecting growth for at least a month.

You are getting 50 orchids on Monday!!!!

shahrezsyed 11-11-2011 04:18 PM

@daethen I know!!! AWESOME. But I'll only have
10 phals
5 cattleyas
5 vandas
and 10 paphs for myself
Which is still awesome.
the order 20 plus 50 more are for my college greenhouse.

Good work. Can you (or Bud, or both) enlighten us how to make the turmeric preparation? Why/how is it better than cinnamon? With so many Indian shops here, it's not hard to get spices, so I'm all ears.

shahrezsyed 11-11-2011 05:24 PM

Well I know its better than cinnamon because I live in Pakistan which used to be india and I've always been told that its a better fungicide and people actually use it as a quick disinfectant.
You can either boil it in water. with 5 TBSP/gal. then drain through a very fine cloth. OR make a paste with water.

It's a good feeling to nurture a dying orchid to bloom. It would be nice to watch them grow with you.
Btw. Would like to know more about the tumeric use as a fungicide.

Good luck with your orchid.

Thanks Shahredzsyed, that sounds good. I will try this next time I need to do some quick first aid. Does the paste become as dark and hard as the cinnamon? Can it be added to rubbing alcohol without it burning the leaves? I'm asking, because it would be nice to have something safe to use when dealing with scale or mealybug damage. (btw, there is a large Indian and Pakistani community here)
