Plant totems

Does anyone know how to make a plant totem. You know, those thick sticks with coir around them so that vining plants can attach themselves to it?? I was thinking a PVC pipe, covered in either coir, or tree fern fiber, or expanding foam which in turn is covered in coco-fiber. Maybe someone here has better advice? Thanks.

I don't seem to be able to buy/find totem poles in Australia so i am thinking of making one.

Just thought to ask here first to see if there are any flaws or downside to my idea.

I was thinking of buying a roll of 1 cm square stiff hard plastic cage netting (the stiff plastic one not like fishing net). The stuff you make say a rabbit hutch from.

If I roll say the metre high length into to say 10cm diameter cylinder and filled it with coir chunks do you think orchids would like to mount to it?

I was thinking the thickness and the water holding capacity of coir will mean less watering then cork or slab mount, but with the all the advantages of mounting the orchids?

Also i could mount a variety of single cane dends and single oncidium bulbs that are left over from spring that are in compots.

Do you think it will work? :hmm :scratchhead:

Thanks

Sounds good to me. I find these types of things do not retain water so much though.
