First Vanda rebloom with issues
I'm so disappointed because this is my first Vanda rebloom, and I was so proud that I got it to bloom. But now that the first bud is opening I can see that there is some kind of damage to the bloom. I've seen ratty Vanda blooms like this before but never knew what the deal was. And the last few buds look like they're blasting. I know that 2 days ago all of the buds looked perfect. The first 3 pictures are from today and the last 3 are from yesterday. Any ideas?

Thrips damage? Maybe.

I am sorry, I don't have much experience with vandas yet, just had one bloomed. Could you please tell me where exactly the damage is on pictures? All I see is not fully open blooms of beautiful deep blue color.
Thanks. |
I think, based on my experience in vandaceous stuffs that damage might be caused by water penetrating (or water with fertilizer solution) the buds while they are still closed.
I wanna share to you my V. Pachara blue, still up and blooming for more than two weeks. As you can see there's a minor blemish in one of the flowers. This one receives no fertilizer in the past several months (Im lazy to mix and spray them) so probably that damage may be caused by water that sits inside the bud during its early stage. http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...30165167_n.jpg |
Maybe it is water causing the damage. We have had rain almost every night for several weeks. It seems to only have affected the buds in the last couple of days. I have not watered the spike, and certainly not with fert.

Sorry to see that happen to you after all your hard work. I really do believe that it is thrip damage. On the bud that blasted you can see the black areas where a fungus took root on damage I'm sure was caused by a sucking insect, thrips seem the most likely candidate. |
That happened to my Vasco. Viboon Velvet Perfection
I had 8 buds and only 1 bloomed that lasted for 4 weeks. There was a fungi of some sort that blasted the buds to tiny black balls sometimes its genetically defective ... but these new hybrids were made specifically for florists shops cut flower arrangements that lasts for 10 days or more ina vase of water...blooms several times a year. second blooms are exciting...its also a happy healthy plant...lots of thick roots! |
For those who may be interested, this Vanda is showing another spike nubbin! It has only been 3 months since the last spike started. Not bad. I think it likes it's little spot in the tree! This time I'm going to keep the spike treated with Insecticide! :D
