I. D. please

These were on my gongora leaf this morning. Only on one leaf, did not look like anything had been chewing, mostly leaf damage from sun and wind. They have a hard light tan shell, perfect beading of what looks like flower seeds attached on two inches of the underside of the leaf. Never seen this before have you?

I think those are eggs(see pic) and it will hatch into caterpillars or worms and eat the leaves. If you can detach it manually ... its not good for your plant ... it also looks nasty.
I also noticed the black spots on the leaves, if you have phyton 27 (very diluted) use a cotton swab to wipe it; I have a sneaky suspicion it started with a mite bite and fungi is starting to colonize it

The entomologist part of me is very curious to know what is going to come out of those eggs!

Hey Camille, do you know if mantis insect is beneficial to my chids? I hate bugs in my house but if it is creaning all my plants...Id take care of it...

camille1585 09-08-2011 04:26 PM

Mantis only eat other bugs, so they're no problem to have around plants. Actually good to have! Never heard of them indoors though, not much prey there.

Bud, what is that a pic of? The leaf was removed before the pic, and all eggs have been smashed. Didn't want to leave it. I spray with phyton 27, but if you think it needs wiping I'll try that. Thanks for helping

Still wondering what it is, I'd like to be watching for something.

Carol, if its the one leaf only you dont want to spray the whole plant...wipe the affected area only because I beleive the chemicals affect the new leaf growth and buds and I googled the insect egg and it gave me a picture, thats the one I posted. I dont know from what insect it is from...but it is similar to your pictute in shape and size.
@Camille...thanks! I will think of it because I found a mantis on one of my vandas as i was doing a photo of it on the ground level grass area of the back of my building, it came back with the plant inside my apartment. I think it is among my plants near the window...I have a new roomate LOL

Dug around in the Entomology sites I know of, those are likely to be Katydid eggs. They have the same shape, and Katydids lay them in rows on leaf margins. Another photo

absolutely that's it. That grasshopper I've been spraying to get rid of on a hedge I have. Also I claim a grasshopper bit off all my buds on a new catt spike. Perfect, Thanks so much.

Its good you smashed the eggs...grasshoppers have the reputation of ruining crops. Imagine if it multiplied in your garden...whew...
