Stanhopea Ronsard blooming

My Stanhopea Ronsard (wardii x oculata) opened this morning, I could smell it's wonderful scent well before I got anywhere near the greenhouse.

I love the way the array of flowers reminds me of a flight of tiny dragons, or a flock of birds.

Beautiful. My Ronsard hasn't spiked and it may not because I repotted it a few months ago. It did send out a new bulb though. The blooms do smell wonderful.

Junebug - That's funny because I got around to repotting very late this year and for the fisrt time in a couple of years all of my Stanhopeas either bloomed or are in spike. One of my wardiis had a spike starting when I pulled the old sphagnum off.

I can't remember if it was Nina Rach or Dr. Pulley (both noted Stanhopea growers) who told me that many Stanhopeas like a very cool winter. I left mine out of the greenhouse except when we were expecting a freeze.

My Ronsard bloomed twice last year, late Summer, and fall. The leaf is still unfolding on the latest growth so maybe I'll see some spike action soon. During the cold, my temperature cut off before indoor protection was 48 degrees.

I don't think I would be wrong in saying that mine probably saw temps in the high 30's for a night or two.
