How to Care of the Oncidium Orchid

I am new here. For some tips on how to grow oncidium orchids, please read my post bellow.


Oncidium orchids are one of the most popular orchids. This is due to the fact that there is a wide variety of orchids to choose from. Moreover, these plants are not hard to tend to at home.

If you are interested in creating hybrids, then members of the Oncidium group of orchids could be a great choice because these plants cross-pollinate fairly easily.

Today there are thousands of hybrids, depending on the part of the world you are located in.

The following are among the things that a person might need to know about this type of orchids:

- Oncidium orchids can be taken care of indoors or outdoors. Oncidium orchids will normally thrive in a home or garden where the temperature and humidity is right.

- Contrasting with other orchids that easily succumb to the direct heat of the sun, with oncidium orchids direct sunlight is better. This being dappled sunlight is preferred – consequently if you have some trees and a bit of shade, that would be better for oncidium orchids. The more light and warmth these orchids receive during the growth season, the better off they are.

- Similarly to other sun-loving orchids, Oncidiums love a lot of water. Due to this, plan your watering more than twice a week to hydrate your plants, especially during the growth season.

I have some oncidiums, but also I'm having some big problem with them. I have an orchid house, they have ligth, they have humity, they have everything they need, but they are doing terrible, dying. I have spoken with some others growers, change the medium, do everything possible, I love them, but I'm thinking of given up on oncidiums. I heve them in boxes, good drain, good air. What can I do?

How are your roots? Can you post a couple of pictures of your plants?

All of my oncidiums are outside and receive dappled sunlight throughout the day. I have two of my oncidiums in s/h and they absolutely love it. I have another growing in hydroton (no s/h) and two others in bark. The ones in s/h are doing the best. Just my :twocents:

How often do you water them? I found, to my amazement, that my oncidium Sweet Sugar needed to be watered twice a week, and when it was outside it need to be watered three times a week. My bulbs were always shrivelled until I got brave enough to give it water more often.

I water mine at least three times a week, especially during the summer...then again, I live in Miami, FL. The summer heat/sun is killer, and as a result my orchids dry out a lot faster than in fall/winter.

Very good to know. Mine seems to shrivel unless it is moist all the time. So that gives me some confidence in watering more often. I've been waiting for it to finish blooming and then I will repot it to make sure everything is fresh, but now it's sending up another spike! I'm gonna just do it anyhow and hope the spike is ok. Any more guidance for taking care of my Onc. Sweet Sugar? It's one that I waited, shopped, waited, shopped, until I found the best yellow Onc I could find! It's really spectacular, as far as yellow Oncidiums go, in my opinion. So, I would love any advice you can give. Thanks!

I live in Miami too. I was watering like 2 times a week and with this heat I'm doing it 3 times, the bulbs are like brown and dry thats why I do it 3 times a week, plus my orchid house has like fog sprinkler I used it for seconds

Have you checked your roots lately? Your pbulbs should not be brown or dry.

Some oncidiums prefer cooler temps as well. I agree, the bulbs should not be brown or dry. Pictures would be helpful. And as mentioned above. How are the roots??
