phal spike now?
I just spotted a spike on a noid phal but isn't this far too late for that? I got it in november of 2010 in bloom. Repotted after blooms were spent in february of this year and its grown nice healthy roots like crazy since then. I am happy to have blooms on the way but is it ok for the plant to be spiking right now? Is it just out of phase with other phals?

Some phals are summer bloomers. If it was in bloom last Nov. it will probably be in bloom about then again this year. Congrats!

It's perfectly normal.
It takes 3-4 months from starting a spike to full bloom. So your Phal will be in bloom in October/November, just like last year. Enjoy! |
glad to hear it. Nice pop of pink for the winter!

It all depends on what triggers the phal to spike, some are light sensitive, some temperature sensitive and some are a mixture of both. A lot of NoID phals are mostly temperature sensitive.
I have a lot budding just now because we had a warm April and a cool May and the drop in temps triggered spikes in May which are now at the budding stage (First flowers just opening on a couple of them). Enjoy your flowers :) |
Well it definitely wasn't a drop in temp here in the Florida Summer :whew ....but that's great information for my other phals, Thanks!
