hydroponic masd.
would masdevallias be ok to grow hydroponically? I dont mean semi-hydro, just regular hydro.
|
Sorry, but I've got no idea! I know that my Masdies like it moist, but they also like to have a lot of air movement. If you can provide that with hydroponic, then they may just do well. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about hydroponic growing to know it is would meet this requirement.

Air movement to the roots is important.

I don't know about Mas-d, but most orchids don't like their roots being wet (in water) all the time. I think as long as it just gets a watering and the roots get to dry(always in a humid environment), it would probably be okay. I guess it depends on what kind of hydroponic system you use, and how wet Masdevallias like their roots.

I have my one Masd in a semi-hydro environment, which is a small pot, and I think it's wayyyy too wet. It's not enjoying it's self, I need to move it to a bigger pot so the roots are not covered in water at all times. Semi-Hydro is alot easier than full hydro... though with hydro you can achieve anything, it just requires the correct automation to accomodate the required conditions.

Ocelaris, Yes, having the roots covered in water (even for most of the time) will drown them. The roots need air just as much as they need water. If the medium can stay moist, and there are plenty of gaps to allow air to reach the roots (i.e. the medium isn't really small pieces) then you should find more success.
