My poor Phalaenopsis
Hello All!
I was given a gorgeous Phalaenopsis for admins day and when it started to turn yellow I repotted it only to find that I had root rot and that the plant had been arranged with Styrofoam popcorn on the bottom. Since I’m a beginner and I panicked I cut off a good 90% of the root and repotted it in a mixture of soil and chips. I moved it to a warmer place where it dose not get direct sunlight and stopped watering it as often. Despite my efforts to save the plant all the flowers have fallen off, the stick (sorry Im not familiar with the Orchid anatomy yet) is turning a yellowish color and I am down to my last leaf which is now truning yellow as well. Is there any hope for my baby? Also, If anyone knows where I can find a diagram of an orchid so that I can familiarize myself with the plans parts. Thanks a million |
I'm afraid the fate of your plant seems grim... since your last leaf is now yellowing I'm not sure your plant will survive. However, there is a flicker of hope. Phals sometimes will send up a new growth after all the leaves die as a result of crown/root rot. Keep those roots quite dry for a while and provide water to the plant by spraying the leaves (don't do this in the evening). After a while some new roots hopefully will sprout from the plant's base and the plant will slowly recover...

Here is a pretty generalized layout of the anatomy of an orchid.
Orchid Anatomy I would like to say that your orchid will survive but it sounds like it has gone through a lot in it's life, but its in my character to not allow them to win so with that in mind go to our homepage, scroll down to the third article on Phalaenopsis "The Moth Orchid", you will find an excellent article on culture. If you can share a :photo: with us hopefully it will not be to late to give some advise on its needs. |
And by the way...:welcome: to the OB. Please take a stroll to the Introduction thread "Break the Ice" and introduce yourself to our members.
