AOS awarded orchid list?
Is there anywhere on line that I can check the credentials of orchids that I have?

This sounds like a job for OrchidWiz. Or some helpful soul that has access to it.

The AOS did have a site that you could look up awarded plants. If you are a member, I would hope it is still up and you could access it.

The AOS has all awarded plants from the AOS and also all other word wide organizations on disk. The database is search-able.
It costs $50 and comes with 4 quarterly updates included. New plants are being awarded daily and the updates include them on a quarterly bases. It is called Aq Plus and they are up to version 4.2 The disks includes tens of thousands of photos of the awarded plants, but they are small thumbnail size and the photographer in me is disappointed with this feature. But isn't this better than no photo. Full measurements and other features necessary to describe the awarded plant is extensive and a good way to compare your plants. Den. speciosum looks great when in bloom and you can be proud of 2-300 flowers on a plant after a couple of flowering seasons, but seeing that an awarded plant had 106,000 flowers is humbling yet exciting. The database has every plant classified by its awarded name causing some confusion. All the Cattleya re-classified such as Blc. Hawaiian passion re-classified as Rlc. Hawaiian Passion will find a different awarded plant under each name. There is no cross reference, but there is none from any other source either. Also it is not an intelligent search that accepts miss spellings. For that matter neither does the RHS website. Enter as little as possible if you do not find a hit and chose among the items selected. |
OK, thank you all for the information.

I wonder if anyone who owns Orchidwiz would be kind enough to look up Phal. Amabilis Grandiflora 'Creole' for me, please, and tell me the award/s it has been given? I would really appreciate the help. :)

Phal. amabilis var grandiflora 'Creole' -- species should have small letters for the variety name, Hybrids use capitols.
AM/AOS 82 points April 13, 1985 Sixteen flowers on two inflorescences; flowers paper white; lip callus yellow with lavender barring shading to light lavender at base; flowers of very fine form, overlapping with nice arrangement on inflorescences; larger by 1.0 cm natural spread and with 8 more flowers than for previous award. There is a HCC/AOS from 1984 that does not list it as var grandifloria but could be the same since variations have no meaning in nomenclature There is also a clonal name 'Creole White Cloud' awarded that should be a different plant. For example on awards OrchidWiz (a three year old copy shows 9 awarded plants for Phal. amabilis whereas the current AOS shows 39 awarded plants. |
Thank you so much for the information! I was unclear about the awards made to it.

Orchid Wiz no longer has award data because it is copyrighted by AOS and OW did not want to license it. It will have some old data (pre 2009) that it used without a license.
AQPlus is history. The last AQPlus disk was just issued. AOS awards are now on-line at the AOS website (American Orchid Society) in a section called OrchidsPlus. You do not have to belong to AOS to access it, BUT it is subscriber based for $50 per year. It is now or very shortly will be updated in real time rather than quarterly. |
