Rotted vanilla roots? Is it lost?

Hello all!

At Sue's advice, I replanted my vanilla into AV mix tonight. I noticed that the poor roots had practically rotted at the base. :(

Here is a picture of the plant and one of the roots:

Do you think it will come back? How deep do I put the poor roots? I buried them in the mix, but just barely on the tips and I didn't pack it down. Is this OK?

Your small cutting has a new growth starting upon one of the leaf nodes, so it doesn't look like your cutting is doing poorly at all. Roots on Vanilla are easily and quickly replaced by the vine.

Don't worry about this species. If you fail, you can always ask a member for a piece, or find a VERY cheap piece (less than $10 or shipping costs). Good luck! ;)

It looks fine, Ami
I'm happy to see you switched out what you were growing it in...it will do much better now ;)

Remember, lots of light and mist the roots that are showing quite often. Keep us updated :cheer:

I agree, it should do fine. I planted a cutting that had no good root growth months ago, and it has now taken off with new roots in the pot, and a new keiki growth. They are quite hardy.

Phew-thanks! Should I water the medium at all or just keep misting?
Thanks again, I'm glad not all is lost.

Mine gets watered and fed along with all the others. The misting is important because of the aerial roots. :)

OK- thanks! I'll keep you posted...

here is a picture of a cutting I planted a few months ago and a picture of an older one, the roots look good on your plant, you can't see the roots on my plant but it is growing, it is planted in Aussie Gold and watered 3 time's a week.
