Do mini orchids need more care??
Hi
I want to get more orchids but the problem is room. I thought I'd try mini orchids.. But I was wondering if they are harder to care for. Do they need extra & special care? When it comes to watering & feeding & lights. Thank you |
That all depends on what you intend to grow and the conditions you can provide for your plants. Look up which plants suit your conditions best (or how you could "tweek" them to suit the plants), and take it from there. I grow a lot of minis, quite a few of them mounted, on a window sill. I used to grow larger, cooler growing orchids before we moved. None survived in our current location because the growing conditions were totally different.

Generally they don't require more care, but because they're so much smaller, they don't withstand neglect and improper care as well as larger plants - they just don't have the resources.

definitely agree with Ron - and - small plants also means small pots (if potted) which dry out faster than big pots, so probably do require more frequent watering.

I have a lot of minis and do not have any problems with them. I don't water more often than the larger ones as they are small orchids in small pots. I say go for it. It is a great way to have lots of them with very little room.

Ease of culture also depends on the type of miniature orchid you're planning on getting, how much you know about them, and your skill level as an orchid grower.

I have to agree. I started out with three mini's and thus far only one has bloomed continually for me. Once that bloom spike dies back I don't know if it will product another for me yet or not. However, out of the other two, one did nothing and the other just kept dropping leaves.
Since then, I've purchased many more and have learned that each one has different needs, just like the larger orchids. Research their needs and preferences before purchasing to ensure that you can maintain the proper conditions for them. All in all though, orchid growing for most people is an experiment. I say go for it and learn from the experience! |
Most of my minis are on mounts which makes them a little more needy in the watering department, I think it's more a question of your conditions and time available rather than whether it's a mini or not.
