brought him in for a picture..hes been outside for the past month after he was done blooming..(only paid 10 dollars for it..so what the heck)...giving him water almost every other day. texas is drought stricken mind you and its starting to get hotter and very dry. he gets maxi-crop liquid fish every other week and weekly weakly peters cal mag the rest of the time.:biggrin:

have him tucked under some trees in the back and he only gets east sun in the a.m. after about 11 hes pretty much just outside in the heat.

counted 5 new "old" growths that didnt bloom and 4 new fresh growths. will the old ones that didnt bloom bloom next time If I do good? But I noticed the old bulbs that have bloomed the previous time all been cut down..So I wait till new growths get well going and let the leaves get used up and cut them too Im guessing...should be another experience anyway :biggrin: cant beat that at any price..


oh and he has a phaius orchid buddy next to him. orchids need buddies too :) they get lonely

It's looking great! It sure has a lot of leaves and all in nice shape!

Firstly, in my opinion, your orchid needs repotting and secondly, the leaves are weak indicating the plant may need more light. You may also want to investigate using a stronger fertilizer with more micro-nutrients and a better balance of N, P, K.

To answer your question, old bulbs once they have sent out a new growth which has bloomed, will not bloom. I say "generally" because sometimes a bulb will "re-bloom" two years in a row.

FYI - orchids are bisexual, not specifically "he" and "she". :waving

I cant get it out of the pot. Ill have to cut it off the plant...

I think so too when I bought it it was in the back room all alone in the dark. Been slowly bringing it back out some as I didnt want to burn it after its been inside so long :)

ahhh and the old bulbs that sent out new shoots are just old bulbs that didnt bloom..okey that makes sense to me now..bloom or build one or the other :)

fertilizer?...On the fence on that one. I need to get ya a pic from this week seee if its improved as I just started the liquid fish and only had 2 dips so far..

I notice ants now all over and crawling in an out of the pot since I put it outside. Good reason to repot it and hose it down for aphids and bugs.

I hope to do well with it but really dont have much expectations of it any more than having fun and playing with my plants...

That is a pretty impressive plant and definitely needs a repot.......if that's a 12 inch pot or bigger than I would consider dividing it.

Yes repot-It may be so root bound you have to cut the pot open to get it out. Blast as much of the old media out of the pot as you can - from the bottom.
Sometimes plans come apart easy but well grown plants that size may need an axe or crow bar.
I agree with the opinion that the plants needs more sun.

Agree with the repot and my first thought upon looking at it is that it needs more sun, leaves should be a lighter green. Good luck.

hmm I guess I need to read more about repotting these. It fell apart when I got it out the pot..... but in 2 nice big pieces :)..


and thats whats starting to bother me ..Most of the new growths where to one side of the pot and they separated themselves from the rest of the pile when I removed it.Started to hose it down to get some of the old mix out, and they made a nice even break right down the middle where 3 rotten bulbs, 2 large hairy legged monster sized spiders , a few earwigs and around 2 thousand army ants fell out too...

It wasnt a Cymbidium it was an eco system :)

update:
the little one is fading fast as they was no new growth on it and it fell apart anyway when I took it out as roots were rotten..The larger 3/4 is doing fine with 3 new growths and nice straight tough leaves...I should have left it alone, It just doesn''t look as nice as it did in one big piece. Oh well it was only 10 bucks and you can spend more than that on 2 crappy happy meals these days. :roll:
