I Haven't Killed My Phal!

As a novice orchid grower I have to revel in small triumphs... and my latest small triumph is that there's new growth on a phal that I adopted! I've always been able to keep phals alive but could never get them to grow or bloom, and now this little dude on my patio is growin' away! :dance13:

Four new roots (one's underneath the plant), a new spike, and a new leaf! Woo! :bananaslide:

You know it has a newly emerging spike right? :) It's on the left side, at the base of the plant.

I noticed that little spike the other day! :D I'm excited to see what they look like -- I got the plant on clearance 'cause the blooms had all dropped. The tag says it's "Phal. Arriaballs," but I can't find anything online about that hybrid. I sent an e-mail to the nursery it came from, but I'm not optimistic that I'll get a response.

It's growing like a weed, too -- the spike is substantially longer than it was yesterday, and the little leaf barely showed at all yesterday!

 "Phal Arriaballs"!!!

I don't think it's called "Phal Arriaballs". ;)

It might be Phal amabilis, idk. We'll see when it blooms.

 I'm glad I'm not the only one who laughed when I read "Arriaballs." But I swear that's what the tag says! I even made my husband read it!

We'll see. The pot it came in has a sticker on the bottom that says it's from Kerry Nurseries, Inc., which seems to specialize in pooping out lots of orchids to be sold in grocery stores and stuff. We'll see if they actually know what it is.

Yeah, that'd be interesting to know...

I guess more and more breeders are just letting their tongue-in-cheek or off color humor fly in the naming of their orchid's cultivar names.

Congrats on your success! Don't forget to post pictures when your baby blooms :)
