Quest for all Phal species
Hey OB, I'm Andre. I've been volunteering at the University of Minnesota-Duluth greenhouses for about two years now, which got me into them through exposure. This will be my last semester before I receive my B.A. in biology ! Been growing orchids for about a year now and have just over 100, mostly being species. No one around my age, 24, grows orchids that I know of. It seemed like an interesting thing to get into since no one I knew except my mom grew them, so I took it and ran with it. I've met many friends and have loved being taught by the elders. I am Vietnamese-American and have been trying to acquire Vietnamese native species. Collecting all the Phal species has been a goal I have set for myself and to start my hand at breeding some of the primary hybrids not done yet.
For the record, I have some people I would like to thank for leading me down this fun path. Jason, Jerry, and Matt at Orchids Ltd., Deb at UMD, Robbye at UWS, Northland Orchid Society, and my mom. Below is the list of Phal species and forms I currently have and will be periodically updated. I will also put bloom pictures up soon. Thanks! |
WOW! What an impressive list! I have similar goals, yet I am aiming for sections Polychilos and Parishianae. BACK OFF from the un-made primaries! I plan on doing an 'Eternal' series, primaries with Eternal in their name. The first one I register will be Eternal Wind. So don't steal it!!!

Very nice collection and nice names BlazingAugust!
I love Parishianae and those are the ones I am trying to collect, forms and hybrids of. |
funny I have the same goal to collect all the Phal. Gotta catch them all PokePhals!
I'm up to 22 species with a few duplicates |
Thanks everybody! I want to get some pics up of my equestris and a Venus (equestris x lindenii) that I won at my orchid society raffle. Funny thing is I won three times total that night. My corningiana got real bad fungus rot that killed all the leaves. Had it treated with Phyton and it's just a clump of healthy roots now, deciduous style ...
Recent pics: P. bastianii http://www.orchidboard.com/community...-bastianii.jpg P. phillipinense ('Mindoro' x 'Mindanoa') http://www.orchidboard.com/community...x-mindanoa.jpg P. kunstleri http://www.orchidboard.com/community...-kunstleri.jpg ps. One of my roommates asked me if orchid collecting was like catching pokemon. Funny you mention that... |
That's a great list! Good going. I don't see gigantea or appendiculata or parishii on it............I also have different clones of lueddemanniana and equestris you may like - pm me, and I may be able to help you out some.

I did have what I thought to be a parishii that turned out to be Lovely Kid (parishii x lobbii) that was mislabeled. Waiting to get it replaced still, but it's looking no good at the moment. Orchids Ltd. has huge giganteas and I'm waiting for my housing transition to happen before I get one. Have not been able to find appendiculata.

OMG... I'm sooooooo jealous !!!!!

I *was* on a quest to own all the Phal species, but space restraints and what I already have in my collection have changed my decision to collect them all...now I have collected and will add only the species that catch my eye the most. I will probably leave mannii, pantherina, lamelligera out of my collection for now...
Here is what I have currently: amboinensis appendiculata bastianii bellina 'Chin Yo' bellina bellina ('Blue#3' SM/TOGA X 'Blue#2') braceana (3) celebensis cochlearis corningiana ('Fernbrook' AM/AOS X 'Red Rebel') cornu-cervi deliciosa doweryensis (2) equestris 'Natural World' equestris 'Riverbend' equestris var alba fasciata (2) fimbriata floresensis fuscata gibbosa gigantea hieroglyphica hieroglyphica var alba inscriptiosinensis javanica lindenii lowii (5) lueddemanniana 'Woodlawn' maculata malipoensis mariae var flava mariae 'Lenette' mariae 'Alpha' micholitzii minus modesta (2) pallens (2) parishii pulchra schilleriana speciosa 'C#1' (2) stuartiana stuartiana 'Larkin Valley' sumatrana taenialis tetraspis tetraspis 'Alpha' X 'Beta' venosa 'Sundance Kid' X 'Rachael' violacea var alba violacea var coerulea violacea 'Blue July 4th' X 'Amazing Grace' viridis wilsonii zebrina 'Gene' |
