Name of this Cymbidium species?
 

Over the weekend, i visited an old friend and I was surprised by many of their cymbidium he has. One particular plant looked very intriguing and i took a picture of it. Unfortunately he had lost the tag many years ago. It has a light sweet fragrance as well. Can anyone tell me the name of this species or hybrid? the flower branch tends to arch almost pendulous.

As we constantly say on this forum "it is virtually impossible to identify an orchid hybrid once it is has lost its tag". With the species, it is a little easier. If the foliage on your plant is narrow and when bent, tends to break, an educated guess is that you may have the species Cym. insigne. Look it up through Google and see if you can find other photos of the species and see how yours compares in flower count, habit of inflorescence and size. If you do not actually have the species, it is possibly very close to it as an offspring.

Hmm insigne?
I have one in bloom right now. It has about a 5 foot spike, and it's as straight as an arrow. The spike in this photo looks arching and while I'm not real good at id, I'd have to say this doesn't look like any of the insigne that I have bloomed (namely var album and insigne)

What do you think CL based on the spike habitat?

This is a HYBRID, doubt if you'll even get close to a name unfortunately.

Sometimes you have to ask questions to totally eliminate the suspicion that a plant may be the species. There is heavy insigne influence in this flower, but the spike habit as shown, I will agree, indicates that it probably is not a pure insigne but a hybrid. I suspect the leaves are too thick too, that is why I asked the questions I did. That said, not all insignes have 5' upright spikes if grown in less than ideal conditions, but the thin leaves are an identifier for this species. A photo of the plant itself would help.

Hey, we can't be right all the time but I felt this flower needed to have some questions asked of the owner to help him gain more knowledge on the species and its influence on hybrids. I suspect there is also an influence of two other species in this flower. Anyone care to make a guess - Bob? Roy?

I guess from the flower,there are insigne and tracyanum inside it.
