What a Beauty. Looks quite large.

Nice photos! Beautiful flower too!

The lip looks kind of like a rib cage, with an oversized vampire head on top. This one definitely belongs in the genus Dracula!

Genus Dracula comes from DRAKOS=Dragon and the flowers are reminiscent of a dragons mouth... nothing in common with vampires....

20cm! That's huge. Thanks so much for sharing - this is really different. Is there any way for you to post a picture of the whole orchid (not just the bloom)?

Thanks again.

A good point. However, Vlad Dracul, also called Vlad the Dragon, was the father of Vlad Dracula the Impaler, upon whom Bram Stoker partially built the main character of his novel. So there is a connection whether that was the original inspiration for naming this genus "Dracula" or not.

Regardless I was simply pointing out the appearance of the flower as my imagination interpretted it and commenting on the appropriate, if coincidental, genus name, not the actual meaning of the genus name.
