NOID No More!!!! Found it's name!!!

So after owning this plant for three years I finally found it's name! I took my kids to the Denver Botanic Gardens last month and discovered that they have really expanded their facilities and created a whole orchid walk area loaded with tons of wonderful orchids that line a wall just outside of their greenhouses and growing rooms. A truely beautiful facility!

Anyhow, amongst those plants in bloom were something I've been looking at for a long time now. The blooms were the same, same size, same coloration, the leaf structures, heavy and ribbed and the plant size was diffinantly the same. My former Harliquin NOID is rather distinctive because it is so huge! One of it's leaves measures 14" long and the spikes are some 18 to 20" long loaded with lots of Raspberry colored and white splotched pedals, just like the plant I found at DBG. I found someone that worked there and they did some research and found me the name.

(drum roll please)

Phal. Fiuhbao Fairy x Phal. Sweet Strawberry

So I wrote up a name tag and gave it it's name! A happy moment that doesn't happen much with NOIDs. But this plant deserves it.

It's in bloom again right now and it is truely gorgous with 4 spikes and probably some 20 or more blooms.

Pictures:

Just a testiment to how strong these spikes are. One of our Budgies enjoying a more natural moment.

This orchis is almost fully open and if last year was any indicator, these blooms will last almost 5 to 6 months! This plant is amazing and one of my favorites!

while it may resemble the orchid at the exhibition, it is doubtful that it is truely that hybrid, as there are thousands of similar hybrids in the phal family....unless a plant comes from a reputable dealer with an intact nametag, it is still a noid.....sorry....but you can call it ed or you can call it fred or you can call it whatever you like in your own collection.....lol

The name doesn't matter. It's absolutly gorgeous, and so is your bird. I should take a picture of my blue parrotlet and blue vanda together!

Say what you will, but I am certain that this is the name of this hybrid. I just wonder how you can be so certain that is not that name. You have no evidence at all other than there are a lot of hybrids. Not exactly convincing. Where-as I have seen both, studied both and yes, there is an outside chance that there is a genetic difference, I'm still sure that I'm very, very, very close if not spot on.

I'm going with it. Don't rain on my parade! :D

If everything matches, I think its a go. Congrats. Love the keet on the flower stem. hehe, so cute.
The only other thing you can do is find out if the vendor you got it from also got it from the same source as the botanic garden.

Beautiful, intense colour, Chas. Good growing!

:)

Good growing. The flower color is very intense and striking. If you are adding a label to your plant, make it Dtps. Jiuhbao Fairy x Dtps. Sweet Strawberry.

That's a very good possibility. The place I got this plant from had nothing but 'Fantasy Orchids' name tags on all the other orchids in their store. This was the only one of it's kind at the store back then. I also saw some Fantasy Orchid tags on a couple of other plants in the display at the DBG. Not the Phals in question, but it was obvious that they get some of their plants from this local grower just outside Denver.

To finish off the ID proccess I guess I could take the plant in bloom to Fantasy Orchids, but I'd rather not upset it like that right now.

It just so happens that I have a Dtps. Jiuhbao Fairy in my collection that is in bloom. Thought I'd share what one of the parents looks like.
