Petition to stop Walmart & extinction of certain fish species
 

Two of the world’s largest food sellers -- Walmart and Supervalu (the parent company of grocery stores chains like Shaws and Albertsons) -- are helping to destroy the world's ocean population by selling massive quantities of endangered fish.

Ninety percent of the seas' top predators have already disappeared. These are fish like bluefin tuna, orange roughy, and shark -- the same species that line the seafood coolers of the two companies.

After pressure from Greanpeace, Change.org members, and others, Trader Joe’s, Costco, and Target have all pulled many imperiled species from their stores to prevent further catastrophe. But Walmart and Supervalu keep pushing these species toward the brink of extinction.

Their survival -- and the survival of the entire ocean ecosystems they're a part of -- could rest on the decision making of Walmart and Supervalu.

They may hold billions of dollars in purchasing power, but they’ve got a major weakness—consumer demand. If shoppers pressure these supermarkets to shape up their acts, they’ll have no choice but to make sustainable seafood the only choice.

I'll sign. I've always liked sharks, so it bothers me to no end when I see the abuse that they and other apex predators have to endure.

Sure wish there were a way to cap the demand for shark fins in Asia.

A really under-appreciated problem is just how damaging bottom trawling is. Picture a bulldozer with a blade 100m+ wide ripping through several kilometers of pristine habitat, stopping at the end, picking out a few choice items and leaving everything else to rot. That's bottom trawling in a nutshell :/

Parts of the North Sea near the UK are trawled 5-6 times a year. From a bottom community full of benthic invertebrates, and a complex 3D stucture, it's turned into a sandy/gravelly/shelly/muddy wasteland.

Yet a lot of "sustainable" fisheries certification bodies will green light some bottom trawled species. :/

(I have a degree in Marine Biology and have worked in the field since then, and have seen many bottom trawls - often in pristine habitat - first hand).

I personally have banned Walmart. I will not shop there and haven't in about 2 years. They care nothing about conservation, child labor, small business or anything else. Well, they do care about the all mighty dollar. I'm not going to turn this into a rant. I will sign this petition and end it at that.
