Greetings from Tacoma, WA

Hello All,
I am so totally new to Orchid growing it's not funny. I live in Tacoma, WA. I am 23 Years old, and have been thinking bout orchids for a year now. After finally buying myself one the other day, my boyfriend gave me one for Valentines Day. With 2 new orchids and a lot of questions, I am sure I will have lots of friends in no time! Thanks to some lovely people on here already I found out that the two orchids I have belong to the Oncidium family. One is definatly a Pansy Orchid, the other I have not quit found a secure answer about. I posted a picture of the flower in case anybody knows a proper name for this Oncidium. Hope to talk to a lot of you soon! Christopher |
Welcome! Sorry, I can't help with the identification but it looks oddly shaped like a Phal flower.
|
It's an Oncidium Alliance (group) intergeneric, i.e., it has several different types of orchids in its background, among them, IMO, Oncidium, Brassia, possibly Odontoglossum and Miltonia or Miltoniopsis. It is almost impossible to identify these if they don't have tags, but the general culture for such hybrids should be all you need to grow it. It isn't a Phalaenopsis and needs to be grown jusat a bit cooler than Phalaenopsis, but its very lovely. We are almost neighbors and perhaps I can invite you to several shows, the Mount Baker Orchid Society show in Mount Vernon, March 26, 27 and the Northwest Orchid Society show in Shoreline in April (I can't find the dates).

Thank you SO much, that helps me a lot! :0) I think I will repot it as well as the roots are starting to come out of the bottom of the pot. The orchid shows sound amazing. are they very big? I used to pass through Mt. Vernon on my way home from Bellingham. It sounds like fun. Where can i find more information on it? Does the Mt Baker Orchid Society have a website?
