Hi all! Having a bit of a freak out here...I think my vanda might be spiking. Its a little early to tell but I just CAN'T WAIT!! Take a look and let me know what you think!

Really hard to tell yet ....I hate to say it but it looks like a root to me still,but its early

:(glad i wasn't the first to say it. I'm thinkin root...don't fell bad i have a Vanda that is 4 years old to me as a pre bloomed plant..never bloomed...hopin this year because grew a lot of new roots, as I cross my fingers.:D

We can not see your entire plant in the photo, but it does not look big enough (old enough) to flower. When it does flower the spikes will come much higher on the plant.

This low it is either a root or a basel keiki.

In Washington I would think your Vanda will need almost 100% sunlight to flower (7-8000 foot-candles). In addition it will take daily watering and looks of fertilizer at least once a week.

Thanks everyone! Jerry - I agree with you, maybe it is too young? It has 18 leaves, that seems like a lot to me, maybe it needs more?

Probably a root.

Spikes usually form further up on the plant.

Another possibility is a side branch. I have two (a vanda and an ascocenda) that formed side branches that looked similar at first, but root is more likely. Both with side shoots were bag-babies that had probably been abused.

I've had Ascocenda bloom with about 18 leaves, but I think Vandas generally are bigger at bloom.
