Phal. Hilo Lip 'Winter Frost'
I bought this from a society friend a couple of years ago. She has a commercial greenhouse and was phasing out her Phals. It wasn't in the best of shape, and even after repotting and lots of TLC it just pouted. Finally this year it decided to bloom, but it's only got 4 flowers, so still not completely happy. When it's done blooming I will repot again and see if that helps. I was told that Hilo Lip can be difficult to grow until they get to a certain size. So if anyone is considering this one buy the biggest one you can find.
Isn't the lip something?! http://www.orchidboard.com/community...umbs/00222.JPG http://www.orchidboard.com/community...umbs/00143.JPG |
I have a hilo lip as well-- the plant was a seedling when I got it and it grew very well in s/h culture but lately, it's been struggling. All of my phals grown this way thrive but this one. It seems its a bit more needy as you've mentioned.
Mine bloomed for me this year but after seeing the plant go into decline I cut the scape and am nursing the thing back to its robust former self. I will re-attempt s/h at some point but my aim now is to get it to push new roots. Beautiful bloom btw! I hope mine improves with age because mine wasn't so wonderful. |
That is real nice! I can't remember ever seeing the petals having so much color with a white lip. It's the reverse of what is usually seen.

I love the 'frost' on the edges. That outside shading is very appealing and yes the lip is also lovely. Nice growing.
