Our neighbour left us some orchids when she moved away.
I have managed to identify some of them but would really appreciate it if anyone can help me with this one. I have scanned a lot of photos but nothing looks similar , well to me anyway :scratchhead: We have had it for a couple of years now & it flowers from the side of the pot. It looks a little like a bloated ant's body before it opens & it is very waxy. Thank you in anticipation of your assistance. Dusky |
Some sort of Stanhopea, but beyond that Í don't know, i'm not familiar with the genus.

To me it appears to be Stanhopea tigrina or one of its hybrids.

Thank you very much indeed. I'm sure I will be back with other questions too.

Looks like either Stanhopea tigrina or Stanhopea tigrina var. nigroviolacea. sometimes they just call it Stanhopea nigroviolacea. I have a difficult time differentiating between the two.
By the way, you'll always want to keep it in an open basket such as you have. Never a pot. The flowers grow out the bottom or side and a pot will interfere with that. Good luck! Here's a very useful website for the identification, care, and feeding of Stanhopeas: The Stanhopea Pages by Nina Rach, edited January 2010 |
Thjank you, very interesting, they are indeed a beautiful plant.
