New Cymbidium Flowers turning Darker???
2 Attachment(s)
Hello everyone!!! I just purchased my first Cymbidium last weekend wile I was in town. It is a beautiful plant and I have been told that I have the climate for this species of Orchid.
Well It has not been that long and I'm already noticing something different about the blooms on it. I don't know if this is a good sign or a bad sign or just a symptom of being put into a different climate. I noticed that one of the flowers has darkened in color on the lower part of the flower and I have another one that is starting to do the same. They are in random areas on the spike so I know it's not ageing blooms. I'm completely clueless to what is going to on with my new addition. I'm just hoping that some one out there knows what my new Orchid is trying to tell me. The first picture With the darker lower part of the flower is the only one like that on the hole entire spike (except for one that is starting to do the same thing). The second flower is what all the other flowers look like. I hope that some one out there can tell me what is going on!! Rachelle |
It's possible the change in environment could be causing the blooms to wilt

What you are seeing is the normal aging of a cym flower. The lip gradually darkens with age and it has nothing to do with thev way you are growing it.

Rachelle,
Under the post 'Pistachio Mint 'Geyserland' check page #2. What you see changing color is the "lip" of the cymbidium as opposed to the three sepals and the two petals. Primary causes are: 1) the normal aging of the flower; 2) the loss of the white pollen cap making the flower think it has been pollinated or 3) just an insect crawling in and out of the flower also affecting pollination. In your case I suspect the second as the pollen cap is missing on your photo. Environment would only play a part if continued dry and warm or freezing temps hasten the total demise of the flowers and that would affect the whole spike. Enjoy your plant and to gain more information, browse the other postings on this Board. Good Luck, :waving CL |
