I got this orchid from the amazonian rainforest; does anyone know what it is?

This summer while visiting the amazonian rain forest near the Pastaza river on the Peruvian border we encountered this orchid. I've cut off 10 cm of the vine (as seen in the picture); there were other flowers blossoming higher up on the vine that was quite long.
I brought it home in a wet towel. Everything fell off within days and only the stick remained.I threw it in the pot and much to my amazement, 3 months later it began to sprout from the very spot of the stick where the blossom was. It'd only grow under a glass bell though and now its growing almost 3 cm (one inch) a day!. Does anyone know the name of this orchid? And is the vine the orchid itself or was the orchid a parasite on the vine? |
That doesn't look like an orchid, but I have no clue what type of plant it may be. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I also dont think it is an orchid. But I do think it has a beautiful flowers.

That's not an orchid... it's an Aristolochia... but no idea of which species... looks a bit like elegans, but I am almost sure it is not elegans... do you remember the fragrance? fetid or sweet?
the wine is the plant itself, and can be very large! By the way, Orchids are NOT parasites ;) |
Ramon nailed it. It looks like what we call Pipe Vine or Dutchman's Pipe. Neat photos!

Thank you so much guys. I must read up more on it, I hope Ill be able to keep it alive aldough It will require building a green house in my living room.

Btw, as far as I remember it didnt have a scent..

Aristolochias are very common in the plant trade, if you can't keep your alive you could always try some more reasonable species that are more commonly available. Mean while why don't you press a little bit of this plant and send it for identification if you still have a flower. You never know could be a new species.

I have searched the web; It resembles elegans the most but neither the flower (no yellow spot on it) nor the vine seem exactlly the same. It seems like its thriwing as lon as I keep it under a plastic tent to maintain high degree of moisture. I dont know where else I could send it for identification though; any ideas?
