Diseases at the tropics
 

Hi,

These are images of slow spreading fungic diseases. They usualy grow in a concentric/circular pattern from an central insect/mite puncture.

The last two, show clear spots, by enzymatic attack from tentecoris.

Thank you for sharing. Do you think that systemic fungicide can help? I think I have #2 on one of my Masdevallia I got from an international vendor.
I am not sure what Tentecoris is.

Great pictures! I have seen all of these in my collection except the last 2 (thank God!). I treat with dithane/thiomil combo. But living in south Florida, the fight against fungus in constant.

That's the understatement of the year. Because of the problems I've had with various fungi and vrtal diseases, I have stopped adding to my collection until I can get it under control.

Part of the problem with my growing techniques was doing the "wait and see" approach to treating problems. I am now on a "preventive" regiment. I use fungicides monthly through out the year, and bi-weekly during heavy rain periods. ALL new plants and repotted plants are treated with Physan 20.

Also bi-monthly systemic pesticide (Merit) though I've not had any insect problems, but they do get a light misting with Talstar when I do my perimeter house pest control.

No more "once weakly" fertilizing either. Now it's "bi-weakly". That is also divided into monthly MSU and Epsom Salts/Potassium Nitrate, with once a month flooding to remove salts.

So, to break it down into four monthly treatments, its...

1st week EpsomSalts/PotassiumNitrate
2nd week Fungicide (Thyomil/Dithane)
3rd week MSU
4th week FLUSH (followed by Pest Control w/Merit)

I do my treatments on Fridays, but if weather is inclement, I can do it on the weekend. Right now I'm starting to get healthy plants, after a disastrous winter/summer of 2010.

I've seen the last 2 afflictions before. Usually from new shipments from the tropics.

When that happens, it is usually a losing battle. And it'll take some plants that have never been infected with this blight with it.

Masdevallia will show similar from heat stress I see that on mine when it gets to warm to suit them usually one leaf or 2 ..

Man, those all look yucky. I hope none of those conditions decide to take up residence in my shade house. You're photos are great. Thank you for sharing.

Interesting! Thanks for sharing. I've seen some of those before. Tossed the plants because I was afraid of cross contamination. I've never been one to treat with chemicals....but maybe I should start. What comes to mind is ALL this dang rain, compliments of TS Andrea. (I never liked her) This looks like quite the routine....Do you find it to be successful? Where do you get these? How do you apply and what is MSU? Apparently....I need some education!
