Is this Phal peloric?

My boyfriend came home with this last night, as an anniversary gift. He was so proud of the fact that not only was it in bloom, but that he recognized that it was also growing a new spike. When I took a close look at the inner petals, which were not fully opened, I realized that they looked to me like "extra lips". Can someone please confirm if this Phal is peloric?

I agree with Hedge. It looks like it probably is and WOW happy anniversary. A real beauty.

Gorgeous!! :) Don't think I've ever seen a peloric harlequin phal before. I'd be curious to know if the other spike will also bloom peloric.

Actually, now that you mention it, there are 2 separate plants in the pot. The other tall spike is the other plant, but the baby spike is on the same plant as the peloric. I'll keep you all posted.

I'd say both the orchid and your boyfriend are keepers (and the phal is peloric). Happy Anniversary!

So do they not always bloom peloric?

Zoi2 12-05-2010 07:29 PM

WOW, that's probably the prettiest peloric phal I've seen. Do you have a name?
No, some don't rebloom as peloric, they bloom correctly.

Not always. Sometimes peloria is a fluke of nature, and the plant will continue to have normal blooms in following years. Sometimes peloria is permanent. I think the blooms of the second spike which is growing could give you an indication if the peloria is permanent.
