Laelia purpurata

The Queen of Brazilian orchids is coming! Big Lp, with flowers rather large (> 13cm). The pic without flash distorts the color of the flower, the flash photos shows a color very close to the real

beautiful!!! my purpurata has awhile to go....but I hope it's just as beautiful as yours! It's a werkhauseri strain, however, but about the size of the smaller half of your plant. can't wait!!!

Cool, white flair on the lip. thanks for sharing..

Really nice. Like David my purpurata has a while to go. (Did you know it's now classed as Cattleya purpurata... but what's in a name, hey!)
Yours is a gorgeous colour lip. I don't know what colour mine will be as it's a cross that was unflowered but the breader was hoping for something in a strong pink... we shall see. |
Now is the normal flowering time for purpurata on the southern hemisphere. You can find import plants flowering now, which is nice to know if your looking for some new ones at a trader. For us on the northern one we have to wait about half a year for the flowering time.

Hi friends, thanks for looking!
Rosie, this story of "Cattleya" is just a fad, remember that until some time ago the fashion was "Sophronitis", another silly idea! Fads come and go, but the glorious Laelia purpurata will be always Laelia purpurata (its basionym, which never change!) |
I think you are right, mine was actually sold to me as a Sophronitis, but I must admit I think of it as Laelia rather than either Sophronitis or Catt. Usually I tend to think of things with the name I bought it under, but this one is an exception.

Beautiful looking catt - Wow!!

I, too, will always think of it as a Laelia. Also I'm going to keep the Laelia name for all of my Rupiculous "Laelias"...some new name like Hoffmannsegalla or something??? I can't even spell it. :D And I think "Rupiculous Laelia" has much more of a ring than "Rupiculous Hoff-whateveritis" anyway. :)
Yeah, Rosie, I guess we'll just have to be patient! I got mine from Miranda orchids and it was two werkhauseri "select" plants sibbed so...I'm hoping for a good blue-gray lip. |
Totally lovely Laelia.
