My Aunt's Waling-waling
 

Good Day to everyone!

Was recently in Davao to visit relatives when I saw the images of Waling-waling in People's Park. My cousin said they have some in their garden.

Took photos from my mobile phone but it looked different from the images that I saw.

Can you please help me identify if this is really a Waling-waling?

Waling-Waling is a common name in the Philippines for Vanda Sandriana. Your plant is deffinately not a
V. Sandriana. I once had a plant like yours (which I collected in the Philippines) but it went to Orchid heaven so have lost the name - will try to look it up for you if someone does not identify it . Unfortunately jungle collectors in the the PI know that V. Sandriana is very valuable and many will sell you most anything and claim it is V Sandriana or Walling Walling.

I believe that, more specifically, waling waling is V sanderiana v alba. I may be mistaken. Here is a photo.

Usual Vanda Sanderiana blooming season is between July up to October and sometimes on February and March. That looks like a hybrid of vanda sanderiana and another vanda. Spur on lip is noticeable (whereas pure sanderiana has no hint of spur on lip).

So I can't help with the id, but I just had to sit here and drool for a minute. :drool: ...so pretty!

Thanks for your reply! My mom used to grow orchids but when she passed away a few years back no one took care of her plants. I'm really quite fascinated with the Waling-waling since I haven't really seen one. So I was kinda excited when my aunt mentioned that she had some in full bloom in her garden. Was kinda disappointed since its flowers where had a pointed shape and the images I saw had a rounder shape. That's why I asked for the group's help so I can inform my Aunt.

Yup, it's still very beautiful even though it might not what you wanted it to be!

It is certainly a hybrid of sanderiana. There are hundreds of sanderiana hybrids as it is such a popular plant.

The pure species is not easy to grow, which makes it more likely to be a hybrid. It also explains the variations in the flowers you have seen.
