Caralluma europea
3 Attachment(s)
This was sold to me as Caralluma europea on ebay. Such a tiny thing. But the flower is large enough and smells of rotten meat, I LOVE IT!
I attempted to pollinated it, but I have to be honest, I wasn't onehundred percent sure where to place the pollinia once extracted. Also I don't know if these plants are self sterile. There are lots more flower buds on the way. I really like the geometry of the flower buds too. |
What a cool plant, Tindo. Is it warm growing?
|
yes, its from the Mediterranean from what I understand.
|
I didn't realize they had pollinia similar to orchids, I thought they'd just have pollen grains like other flowers.
Cute flower. |
I found it interesting that as the day went by the flower petals began to recurve backwards, now hugging the other flower buds.

Oh yes, saddle bags is what the pollinia look like. Like orchids these plants have fused male and female parts, but the structure is totally different than orchids and ofcourse botanists give it different names. This vid will give you a better idea. YouTube - Asclepias curassavica |
That's so cool!

Is this a cactus or succulent? It's super tiny and awesome! Congrats!!!
|
Great video, Tindo.
|
Extraordinary plant. I wonder why the petals recurve back? I like the color pattern on the flower and the heavy substance of this bloom.
