I like the flowers but I killed it...
A couple years ago I tried growing a Vanda roberts delight but I killed it. i really like the flowers of the vanda allaince though. I think my growing conditions are to dry and cold. I can grow cattleyas and phalaenopsis and epidendrums fine but the vanda died. I was wondering if any of the hybrids or other plants in the Vanda alliance can take cooler temps and lower humidity. Like maybe ascocenda, mokara, christieara, kagawara,vascostylis-hybrids like that.

vanda coerulea, check this picture out.
Vanda coerulea in snow | Flickr - Photo Sharing! I thought it could stand a lot of cold but after seeing this picture I'm convinced. PS there is also this great forum to look through and get some valuable information. http://www.orchidboard.com/community...ass-vases.html |
My Neostylis Lou Sneary has been subjected to near freezing temperatures for many years and has been growing very well.
Love the photo Swamper! |
Try a rhynchostylis. They don't need as much light as Vandas, and are somewhat drought tolerant. I had a Rhynchostylis gigantea when I lived in Utah, and it grew very well on a windowsill. If you want something cold tolerant, try a Vanda coerulea, or a hybrid of it (which should tolerate some cold).
I wouldn't recommend Kagawara, Mokara, or any fancy intergeneric containing exotic Vandaceous plants. These are generally warm-growing tropical plants that like a sticky atmosphere, lots of water, and high light. :) |
ok thnks everbody! Ill keep this is mind next time i go shopping! :)
