Winter project 2010?
 

Hi all! Well, I live in Utah, and had to set my clock back an hour... so that gets me thinking about coping with :yawn: SAD early, and wondering if anyone will be considering a Winter Project plant? :lol:

I don't think winter project plants are normally done because of the cold weather and shipping.

I could go for a new orchid now ...

I don't think I have ever seen a winter project. But I agree with Sonya, Its about time for another orchid.

Maybe we could do something that doesn't involve buying a new orchid. Maybe we could all do a s/h project and all put say a phal in s/h or something like that. I'm trying to think of something that would be useful no matter what your conditions and the size of your collection.

Just a thought...

The last few years we've had two projects, a spring one and a summer one. The cold is a big reasons why we don't have them in the other half of the year. I think there are also a couple of other reasons, 1. it takes a lot of organisation, so running more projects in a year would need some new volunteers to run it, 2. I think we would get less people on each project if more than two were run and projects works better when each has more people taking part.

I'm also feeling like I need some new orchids just now... might have to get some pretty NoID's from the local garden center, they had some nice NoID Onc Alliance ones a couple of weeks ago!

Another project would be nice, but it's getting to be too cold for little orchids to travel.:icy No more ordering for me, I only splurge on supermarket/garden center Noids in the winter.

But I do have my own project for this winter, I'm planning for my future orchidarium which I hope to have the money to buy hopefully by february. And also compiling a wishlist of minis that I'll want to buy to put in it.

That's a good thought Bob. Unfortunately timing with new root growth is the key to transferring a plant to s/h and most orchids are not in their new root growth phase right now. It would be a big disaster, I found this out the hard way before.

Keep up the thoughts, we'll find something to do as a winter project. Maybe a leaf cleaning project or something...lol.

An idea for a future project
 

Well, until we find something to do over the winter, I wanted throw out an idea I had for a project, probably the next summer project. Many people enjoyed the Neofinetia project we did I think 2 years ago, and I thought we could do the same for Dendrobium moniliforme.

For those of you you aren't aware of what the Neo project was, everyone bought a Neo form of their choice (so could spend how ever much they wanted) and then we had a photo contest where the decorating counted as well. Decorating would be using nice pots, or including the Neo in a japanese garden theme.

I chose Den moniliforme because like Neos, there are tons of different color forms of it and it's interesting to see all the different ones people buy. New World Orchids has a large selection for all budgets, and EU members could get theirs during the summer when NWO goes to a UK show. We'd have to preorder them in May in that case.

Any thoughts on this idea?

EDIT: This is an idea for the next spring/summer project, not for the winter!

That's an interesting idea, how did the neo project work? Did people go for it? The idea sounds good, but I think it might be a bit to early to plan for spring.

Good call on the s/h thing. Too bad to, because it would e made a good filler pronect.

Maybe we could do something where everyone went out to their garden center and picked out an orchid, maybe pick genera for all, then see what who gets. Or maybe limit it more. Like say a yellow phal. Or a purple den or something like that.
