Political Adds on OB
 

I'm not sure if I'm angry, or just amused, but seeing an add for the senate race here in Nevada is sort of bugging me. They're bad enough on TV, but HERE?!
I can count on one hand the number of active members from Nevada, so how do they justify the spending on so small a bunch. I appreciate that any add money is needed, and welcomed here, but, well, give me a break!

Those ad's are random ads that are displayed according to your search words. Since you live in Nevada and the computer knows it by your searches and other info. It knows to display things that may or may not be of interest to you. Pretty soon they will know EVERYTHING about you. Here's something you can try. Type something in a post it can be anything. Books, cars, houses, people, anything other then Orchids. and see if a ad for it appears after you post it. GOOGLE KNOWS ALL LOL

As Dave has said, the adverts are through a service from Google and they are based on a lot of factors relating to both you and the post you are reading. We all get different adds based on our location.

It's not that anyone has spent money to advertise with OB (except the forum sponsors right at the very top of the page). They pay to advertise with Google, then Goggle pay Orchid Board to have an adertising space provided.

The advertisers specify keywords and places that they are targetting, there may be other factors Google allows them to specify as well, I'm not sure. I know facebook adds allow the advertiser to specify age range and male/female as well.

The adverts you get are then based on how you and/or the page your are viewing, fit the advertisers criteria. I'm currently getting adverts for placing adverts, because that word has been mentioned so many times in this thread. They will be a random selection of the adverts google has which fit the criteria. Actually they are not that random as you can pay more to have your advert shown more often.

So ... I get mostly adverts for things which are UK based, even things which are more local, like just for my local city. We see a lot which are orchid based here on OB simply because the word orchid is used on most pages, but again it's not because those advertisers have placed adverts with OB, but simply because they have specified to Google that they want to be displayed on pages relating to orchids.

Thanks, Rosie. I just found it odd that this is the only place I've seen this, or ANY political add. Google has never been my search engine of choice, and probably never will be. At least this will all be over soon!

Funny you should mention it Kim. I just noticed an add for the Oregon senate race. Google does know all! :rofl:
