Oncidium ornithorhyncum

Hi everyone,

my Oncidium ornithorhynchum has finally bloomed! I'm SO pleased with it! It's the first time it has bloomed and is still very tiny. The flowers are about the size of my fingernail but there are 25 in total!

It doesn't have much fragrance yet - some of the flowers aren't quite open - but I'm getting a sweet caramel scent if I bury my nose in the blooms.

I'm totally in love!

Thanks everyone,

Mikeg - I haven't repotted since I got it from Burnham nursuries in January so it's in quite a fine grade bark mix. I water and fertilize once a week, and it's been mainly in a south facing window although I'd move it back from the window on the sunnier days. We get fairly high humidity year round and it's experienced some broad ranges in temp. even indoors so it seems fairly tolerant. I believe minimum temps should be 12-14 celcius, although I think it would have been colder than that during the winter last year, even indoors.

Once it spiked it has taken a long time for the buds to develop and open - I think it spiked at the end of July but is only opening now.

Sorry I'm not more specific about requirements - I'm not able to manipulate my environment to a huge degree, such as provide higher humidity, or maintiaining a minimum temp, but it has liked it in the kitchen. It has definitely been an easy grower for me.

Really like that.... now I've just got to learn how to get my watering right on Oncs and maybe I'll have to try that one :blushing: :coverlaugh:

:cheer: Marvellous! I still want one!..... Have to wait for next purchase though :_( (restraint isn't always one of my strong points)

Very pretty colors. Congratulations.

Thanks tucker! I love the colours too - purple and yellow! Wonderful!

Rosie - I know right! Once my hybrid started to thrive I felt like I could move onto a species. I have to say this one has been so easy. I think because the pot is so small and light it's very easy to tell when it's dry. I think in the heat of the summer I probably watered more than once a week.

Michele - you are an enabler indeed! But I don't think you need any enabling yourself. I'm amazed at your restraint.... I have to stay off the websites completely!!
