anybody know what this thing is, growing out of the center of my phalaenopsis? the old flower shoot came out from under the plant, like they are supposed to, but this one is coming from the center of the bunch of leaves...what's going on? is this a weird leaf, or a weird flower shoot? does my orchid have cancer? i am new to orchids. thanks for your input!

Strange indeed! Welcome to the Forum. It looks like a mix of a Kieki and a Terminal spike. :hmm
This is the second time I have seen a Phal with a bud and a leaf on the same stalk. Maybe Phals are trying to mimic Aroids?? In anycase, I don't think your main plant will continue to grow. The future of your plant rests completely on that stalk. Take good care of it.

Looks very interesting. Not sure what to say....I have never seen a flower spike originating from the center growing point of a Phal.

I currently have a Phal. Sierra Gold 'Suzanne' FCC/AOS that is growing a new flower spike with a small leaf on it like in your photo though.

I think that after flowering you will find your plant reverting to it's normal habits.

It's an alien orchid - keep an eye on it
and if it asks you to feed it ..
get rid of it ..
Fast!

From what I've been told. When a spike forms from the crown of a phal, the plant will not grow new leaves. You may have to encourage keikis to form to at least keep a copy of the plant. I may be wrong.

Check out this link. It explains it all. HAS YOUR PHALAENOPSIS "GONE TUBULAR"? (TheMondayGarden.com)

Ah cool! I was right. Good info. I really wanted to get that book, A Monograph of Phalaenopsis a while back ago and forgot about it. Thanks!

I knew that I wasn't completely nuts. Thanks, Tess.

Yes you were correct! I should have acknowledged that!

I was lucky to get an autographed copy of the book. Eric was at our society meeting this past sunday speaking on vandaceous orchids. It was an interesting talk and I was inspired to purchase a Renanthera Tom Thumb.
