Should I re-pot my Phalaenopsis Amabilis!?!?!
4 Attachment(s)
Hello everyone,
I'm new to orchidboard.com, and new to orchids... I was wondering if it is safe (as in, will my orchid live) if I were to re-pot it while it's in bloom? I don't like the pot it's currently in and there are no drainage holes. Thanks in advance for any comments! :D I've attached photos of the current pot, the desired pot, and a photo of the set-up I've created to monitor the temperature and humidity levels. |
go ahead
just try to repot it, you can always buy a new phal....
|
I guess...

new pot
the picture of that pot you intend on planting in has a lot of holes in it though... how do you expect it to hold water?
:hello |
Thats contrary to everything I've read so far.... I thought they were supposed to have good aeration...

If you repot it without disturbing the roots too much it should be OK. You can always cut the flowers off if the plant gets upset. It is a good idea to check out the rooting situation.
The pot doesn't need to hold water and you don't want it to. Good drainage is a good thing. You can run water thru the pot when it needs watering and this will flush out accumulated salts and thoroughly drench the potting material. Then after it is done draining, you can water it with small amounts of plant food. There should never be standing water in the pot. |
One thing I should add, your pot looks fine, likely an 'official' orchid pot! However, I can't tell how large the new pot is compared to the existing pot. You should never over-pot orchids. Phals don't grow new growths and expand in width so it should be placed in a pot just large enough to accommodate its roots.

Thanks Silken!
I'll take your advice and try to re-pot! :D |
I re-potted it
:dumb:
I'm a little worried... Its having a hard time standing upright... and like a dope I forgot to wet the soil before I removed it from its old pot... I hope it turns out alright :/ I'll go take some photos so you can see what I'm talking about |
