That is one of the symptoms of a well known fatal disease peculiar to the Aerides family, Roy.
The only known treatment is to send the plant to the Sunshine Coast area in S.E. Queensland for a prolonged rest in an area away from cold weather, floods and bush fires. You already have my mailing address. |
Wow, thanks for the offer Baz. yeah right !
To members, Baz entered some plants in a show recently as a novice, he came away with a Blue Ribbon, Champion in his section. Novice to professional in one day. Congrats Baz. |
I haven't seen this either, Roy. My multiflora's spikes always come from higher up the stem than previous years' blooms.
And I think you should send it here to the US for me to get a better look at it. It's going to be far cheaper and easier to ship it overseas than it will be for you to send it within your own country. :-) Steve |
The joints full of comedians !!!!
I have had a reply from a nursery dealing mainly in Vandas etc but have these also. They say they have seen it happen but very rarely. |
I've never seen that happen. It's also strange that it took 18 months. You're sure it's not a root right?

Is someone pulling my leg, sure looks like it could be? Keep us posted.

Thank you Roy for not mentioning that my plants were the only entries in the novice section!
By the way, how is that new plutonium based fertilizer going in your shade house. Any noticable results yet? Baz |
Update on the spike. It is a spike but digging deep into the leaf axil this AM, the spike has actually burst thru the base of the upper leaf in almost perfect alignment with the old spike. This feature was mentioned to me in another forum hence the investigation this morning.

Why ruin a good story with all the facts By the way, how is that new plutonium based fertilizer going in your shade house. Any noticable results yet? The plants have put on some amazing growth and the flowers have changed. We won't go into the side effects. |
