Cym. Rotarua Rose 4N 'Feathered Fantasy'
Last year at the Southern Orchid Spectacular in Sydney, Australia, there was a very unique Cymbidium with a combination of variegated leaves and feathery in the petals. This year the owner offered me a flower division of the gem and i should receive it this week. These photos are of the specimen plant from last year's show. Are these Cymbidiums considered rare around the world?

Wow! What a beauty. I love variegated foliage for year-round interest. I don't know how rare it is, but I know that it's tricky to get variegation to come "true" in tissue culture.

Forever Mango,
There are some hobbyists in the US who collect these mutated forms of Cymbidiums, some plants better than others. Flaring, as in yours, does not lend itself to meristemming so the only way to obtain one is to get a piece of the Mother Plant, as you did. It is a bit more unusual to find the variegated foliage along with the feathering. Google "Feathered" or "Peloric Cymbidiums" and you should find lots of pictures and links. CL |
