Poll: Tempered Glass vs. Plate Glass for Terrarium
This is a question for anyone who has made a glass terrarium before. Do you recommend Tempered or regular Plate? I have heard pros and cons for both. What do you think?
|
Being a materials engineer with degrees in ceramics - not a terrarium builder - I would think regular plate glass is more than sufficient, as there will be essentially no bending stress on the walls (caused by the water in an aquarium).
Not only that, if you want to drill the glass for any reason, you cannot do so with tempered glass. |
As Ray already said, no need of temperate glass for a Terrarium in a normal size.. my terrarium is 3.5*4.0*2 ft. and has been made with regular glass. Due to the sizes, the glass is, of course, pretty thick... Furthermore, of you need to drill the glass, you need regular glass...
I would say that only if you plan something really large, and have small kids (who could break it) and also the extra money needed, and want some extra safety... go for temperate... but for a "normal" terrarium... regular plate glass... |
Thanks for the replies! i want to make this terrarium 47"x 13" x 16" tall.... I was going to use 1/4" glass. Does that sound sufficient?
