D. Tobaense Culture Question
 

Would anyone care to share their culture techniques? I have owned one of these lovely orchids since
Feb. 2010. It came in a 2 inch pot and was only a few inches tall. I watered twice a week under lights, and it seemed to do well. Once spring came, I placed the orchid outdoors after gradually acclimating it, in an eastern location, some shade, outdoors. Leaves were OK at first, but as the temps got hotter (I live in NJ), the leaves bagan to yellow one at a time. I e:mailed the nursery, and they told me to water more often. This did work. Eventually, the orchid became quite tall and shot out another stem with leaves. I increased its clay pot size to 3.5 inches, and it did well the rest of the summer. I did water every other day. In the fall, I brought it back indoors. I decreased the water, and the leaves started to yellow. I then increased the water back to every other day, and the leaves still continue to yellow. It looks healthy otherwise. There is no rot, the stems look normal, simply it yellows one leaf every few days which eventually drops off. Any recommendations would be so appreciated. I love the look of this orchid, although I have never had it in bloom. I would like to grow it so that it would eventually bloom. Thanks!

I too would like to hear about some cultural conditions. I have similar problems as dendrobiumfan, with the leaf drop. I've somewhat narrowed it down to temperature (too hot = BAD!) but I have no idea about how dormancy works. I put mine unintentionally through dormancy (aka I thought it was dead so I stopped watering it) last winter, and it came back to life with a new cane and a flower. It still looks a little crappy though - could heat be the culprit?

DendrobiumFan and Calvin this species does not experience dormancy. It wants to be grown in high light but kept cool. This is a species that even on gray ugly winter days in the g/h the mount still gets watered.

The leaves on the canes should hold for multiple seasons. Try increasing the moisture as long as the plant receives adequate light.

Thanks Brooke - It's definitely heat that's messing mine up. It just gets too hot below my T5s inside the tank. I'm running a cool mist humidifier around the plant and hope to get another setup with light but not enclosed. How important is humidity for this plant (I have it mounted)
